When I was a kid... Super Mario Galaxy edition

Remember the SNES? It was popular when I was in high school/college. I remember playing games on it with two kids I babysat in college. Some nerd (I mean that in a good sense) has put up a video on how Super Mario Galaxy would have looked like on the SNES. Incredible! You can see it here.

Finally a reason to own a PS3

Easily one of the best games of the year, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is by far the best game available for the PS3 and the most beautiful game on any system (sorry, Bioshock). The motion capture used for movement is nothing short of amazing, the enemies move in realistic ways and don't just stand there waiting to get shot, and the screen isn't cluttered with things like health bars (when you get close to death the screen turns more black and white, when you recover health the color returns). It actually feels like you are playing through a movie. Either buy this for your PS3 or come to my house and check it out!

Wii Alert Update

Not suprisingly, it seems that Toys R Us is selling out of their Wii console and game stock like crazy. Save yourself the aggravation, go online and get your 3 for 2 Wii Games there!

Wii Alert! Wii Alert!

Do you have a Wii? Now through this Wednesday, November 21 you can get 3 games for the price of 2 with free shipping (online) or in the store! Since Wii games don't really go on sale this is a great offer. Just last week I got the highest rated game of all time, Super Mario Galaxy, and they gave me a $25 gift card!

As my brother pointed out...

Microsoft has actually listened! Due to an amazing hardware failure rate (a recent survey of console-selling companies lists the XBOX 360 failure rate at about 37%, the PS3 rate at 1% and the Wii rate at 0%), Microsoft has agreed to extend the warranty for all XBOX 360s to 3 years. Here's betting their next console goes through a more rigorous testing process.

Musings...

The older I get the more I want nothing to do with scary rides at amusement parks. This summer has done nothing to persuade me otherwise...

The only time I watch Fox (blech) News is at the gym and then it is only glances here and there while I'm doing cardio. I have noticed that they spend a lot of time talking about Rosie O'Donnell. Consistently. Almost every time I am there. Yesterday it was for almost 15 minutes in a segment called Rosie's Rants. Interesting.

I still don't feel 100% after coming back from Germany. The jet lag has left me tired and happy I didn't have to travel this week.

I think my chances of seeing the Spice Girls in concert are pretty bad. Evidently 1 million people have signed up for 11 concerts so far.

Don't freak out but I'm going to say something nice about Microsoft. My XBOX 360, built in 2005, had the dreaded 3 red rings of death meaning the hardware failed. I called to get it fixed and they told me it was out of warranty so it would cost me $140 to fix. Well Microsoft has admitted to production problems with consoles made in 2005 so why should I pay for them to fix their mistake? I waited about a month, called back and asked again that they fix it for free since it was their (admitted) issue. The lady tried to tell me that I had bought the console in May 2007 (2 months ago) when I actually bought it in November of 2005. OK so that wasn't the nice part. I told her about the 2005 issue and after doing some research she told me that the offer to fix 2005 consoles was a limited time offer. I explained that I travel every week and therefore don't play it nearly as much as these young whippersnappers these days and that's why it took so long to break. She didn't budge. I told her she had lost a Microsoft customer and I was just as happy with my Wii and I would obviously not be buying any more 360 games or accessories. She asked if she had satisfied me and I said, "well no, if you had wanted to satisfy me you would have made me an exception to your limited-time rule and you would fix my console which was clearly manufactured in a period where you were having production problems." "Well sir, I'm not authorized to make that kind of exception." "You could talk to your supervisor and get an exception if your goal is truly to provide exceptional service as you have told me." So a few minutes later after talking to her supervisor (or not?) she approved the exception and in a month or so I should have a fixed XBOX 360. OK so only the very last part was nice, for the rest she was just an idiot.

Speaking of gaming, check out Overlord. Or at least check out the demo. Having your minions kill rabid flesh eating unicorns? HIlarious! Really, it's a very funny game.

That's enough of that

So my 18-month old XBOX 360 died and Microsoft wants $140 to fix it. Never mind that they have publicly admitted that the models made around that time were defective. So I took a look at my game collection and decided there were only two games I really wanted to keep:

Viva Pinata! - Skip and I love this one. It's like the Sims for your garden with cute animals.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted - One of my favorite games on any system. I'm not very good at the races but I LOVE having the cops chase me and seeing how long I can evade them (I think my record is almost 30 minutes).

So... I am taking my 360 games to EBGames for credit, I'm going to Circuit City and buying Need For Speed: Most Wanted for $5 on sale, buying the adapter so I can use the Microsoft controller with my PC and that's that.

Now if my Wii broke that would be a whole different story.

What to do?

One of the few fun things about being sick is that I can actually play some games! I know some of you think I do it morning to night but I'm lucky if I play 2 hours of games a week these days. At the moment I'm playing Titan Quest: Immortal Throne.

Wiimote attacks!

You may have heard about the various TVs being destroyed by Wiimotes, hands getting caught in ceiling fans by overzealous Wiisports tennis players, etc. Here is one of the funniest articles I have seen on the subject...

Wii update

I got three Wii games yesterday (Red Steel, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz and Rayman Raving Rabbids. I had seen a post on the internet that some GameStops were selling 3rd party Wii games early and I had to mention that fact to the sales clerk. One short call and he sold away. The only other games I want are Trauma Center: Second Opinion (sold out) and Legend of Zelda (1st party). Since Amazon won't return my email on if or when they are shipping my preordered Wii, Skippy and I are planning our two-store attack for Sunday morning.

If I had known PS3s were going for so much on EBay I would have gotten us to preorder a couple. One went on Ebay yesterday for $10,000.

It's all just so exciting...

So I'm 37 years old and I still like video games. A lot. Granted not as much as I used to, but certain kinds are still a lot of fun. This week brings two new systems and a necessary accessory.

The Playstation 3 doesn't interest me in the slightest. I don't know why but I have always had a bias against Sony in the games market. Never had a Sony console, never wanted one. I did get to play a racing game on Playstation 3 at Target and it was actually quite amazing. But no thanks.

The Wii, on the other hand, has me much more excited than it really should, considering my age Skip and I finally got to play ExciteTruck last weekend (fun, but not enough depth to buy). Yesterday I was in a mall that had a huge kiosk with five different systems for use. Four were devoted to different Wii Sports games (it comes free with the system, Tennis, Boxing, Bowling, Baseball) and the last one was for the new Legend of Zelda game. Now I have never played a Zelda game ever but I can't wait to have this one. It used the Wiimote and the numchuck and was just so easy to pick up and play. I played more than 10 games of tennis. Tennis is amazing fun and I can't wait to start refining my shots so they go exactly where I want. I was lucky enough to get a preorder in with Amazon (I'm not crazy enough to wait in these long lines) but god only knows when Amazon will actually ship.

So the necessary accessory is the new Microsoft HD-Drive for XBOX 360. I wish the Wii just came with DVD playback (it will, but not until late 2007). Why do you need that, you ask? Well I only have two component slots on my TV and they are currently used by the XBOX 360 and the DVD Player. The HD-Drive hooked up to the 360 will free up a component slot for the Wii. Boring but true.

In other news, my Mom is coming for a 10 day visit tomorrow. How fun!

Emmit Smith won Dancing With The Stars. I don't watch it but my Mom loves it. I don't understand how Mario I've-Never-Had-Any-Dance-Training-Even-Though-I-Danced-Professionally-On-Kids-Incorporated Lopez wasn't disqualified. More power to them and thanks to Tucker Carlson for perpetuating the stereotype that Republicans have a stick where they shouldn't and can't dance to save their life. Oh, and who was the Republican a-hole that sent out a HUGE mailing to his support base telling people to vote for Sara Evans because she represented his kind of values. So much for it being about how you dance.

Kylie Minogue is back performing after her breast cancer fight. Please, please, please come to America to perform.
